I would like to take this opportunity to inform you about our Rainbow Words! Rainbow Words are a system of organizing and learning the high frequency words students are expected to know by the end of TK & Kindergarten. Many are off to a great start! High frequency/sight words are words in the English language that appear frequently in written text and should be recognized instantly. Instant recognition is also important because many high frequency/sight words do not sound as they are spelled. We practice using, reading, and writing high frequency/sight words throughout the year. We will explore multiple high frequency/sight words a week in further detail. All students will start with the RED words. The words in each color group build upon each other, so please do not start words in the group until you hear from me that your child has mastered the previous one. Each child is assessed on their high frequency/sight words, they will either receive a certificate for getting into the next color group, or a note with the words they need to continue working on. I will try to test weekly to encourage excitement about getting to the next color. Each child will have a rainbow on our sight word bulletin board. As they complete each sight word color group, the student will color in the corresponding section in their rainbow. For example, when the student can read all words in the red group, they will color in the red section of their rainbow. When a student has completed all clubs and their entire rainbow is colored in, they will have an opportunity to glue cotton balls on the clouds, and add glitter to complete their rainbow. Please support your child’s high frequency/sight word learning at home by practicing the words everyday. Our classroom goal is for every child to have all colored of their rainbow colored in by the end of the year! As always, don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your reading support at home! I will place all of our rainbow words on the class website as we go. I encourage you to print a copy at home and make flashcards for each color group as your child gets there and continue to practice color groups they have already completed.
